Instructions

  1. STEP 1: Apply for the comprehensive exam

After you apply, your Advisor will review your course history to make sure you are eligible, then email you with information about what to do next. At this time, you will be added to the Blackboard course for your comprehensive exam.
  2. STEP 2: Complete a Network, webcam, and microphone test

Test your network connection, webcam, and microphone. *note* Use the same computer and connection for your test that you will be using on the day of your Comp Exam.
  3. STEP 3: Create a PowerPoint presentation AND Kaltura video at least 14 days prior to your desired exit interview.

Video must be between 8-10 minutes in length.

Your video must show both your screen/slides and your face when presenting.

If your Kaltura video presentation does not show both your screen and YOU presenting, or if your video does not fall between 8-10 minutes exactly, your exam materials will not be accepted and you will not be allowed to schedule your exam.

We strongly recommend you refer to the sample presentation provided in the Blackboard class when you sign up for the comprehensive exam, or available from your advisor.
  4. STEP 4: Upload your Kaltura Video and PowerPoint presentation to Blackboard

The faculty committee will review your materials and grade the video as pass/fail.
  5. STEP 5: Schedule the Oral Interview

After you receive a "grade" for your video, you will be scheduled for an exit interview with a program director.

Discuss how the Ten Operations Management Decisions and the MSOM program curriculum will fit into your career plans and how it has complemented current or past work.

The ten Operations Management Decisions include:

    • Design of goods and services
    • Managing quality
    • Process and capacity design
    • Location strategy
    • Layout strategy
    • Human resource and job design
    • Supply-chain management
    • Inventory management
    • Scheduling
    • Reliability and maintenance

To prepare for the presentation, students should review the main ideas from each course and how they relate to the seven MSOM program outcomes. It is very helpful to keep textbooks and notes for each class. Some useful review techniques include re-reading class notes; making an outline of principal concepts from each course; preparing a glossary of key terms, theories, and leaders/ideas in specific fields. It is also helpful to review the Course Descriptions and Objectives from the courses you have taken.

Application must be completed by deadlines below.  Once the application is received, Advisors will verify the student’s eligibility before adding them to the Blackboard course where students submit comp exam materials.

  • Fall - November 1
  • Spring - April 1
  • Summer – June 15

Materials must be submitted in Blackboard by:

  • Fall - November 10
  • Spring - April 10

  • The oral portion of the exam is scheduled on a first come, first served basis so the earlier you submit your comprehensive exam materials to Blackboard, the earlier you will be able to schedule your exit interview.
  • The department will contact you after your PPT and Video have been accepted to help you schedule the exit interview portion of the exam. If you have questions about this process, please contact your advisor.
